The Illinois Latino Judges Association was created to engage in activities to improve the law, the legal system, and the administration of justice. Through education, advocacy, and community engagement, ILJA works to ensure that the Illinois judiciary reflects the diversity of the communities it serves.
ILJA promotes goodwill among the bench and bar, advances the professional enrichment of its members and other legal professionals, and defends the integrity and independence of the judiciary. The Association is committed to fostering respect and unbiased treatment for all individuals in the courts and the legal profession.
Membership is open to state and federal court judges, as well as retired judges, who share our commitment to these principles.
Speaking, writing, lecturing, teaching, and participating in activities concerning the law, legal system, and administration of justice to advance public understanding.
Appearing at public hearings before executive and legislative bodies on matters concerning the law, legal system, and administration of justice.

Fostering a positive public perception and better understanding of the culture, history, and traditions of the Latino and Hispanic community throughout the legal system.
During the 1980s, only four or five Latino judges served on the Illinois bench. Despite this small number, these early pioneers laid the groundwork for future advocacy and demonstrated the importance of diverse representation in the judiciary.
The number of Latino judges in Illinois grew steadily over the following decades. As the community of Latino jurists expanded, so did the desire for a formal association to support professional development, mentorship, and collective advocacy.
The Illinois Latino Judges Association was officially established when its first leaders took the oath of office. Judge Ramon Ocasio III was elected as the Association's first president, with Judge Mark J. Lopez serving as first immediate past president. The number of Latino judges had grown tenfold since the 1980s.
ILJA has grown to more than 60 members, including state and federal court judges and retired judges. The Association continues to advance its mission through legal education, community outreach, mentorship programs, and advocacy for a more diverse and representative Illinois judiciary.
